Water Content determination Method

Water Content determination Method

1)Oven Drying Method:-
Simple and most accurate method, not field method.

2)Sand Bath Method:-
Quick,Field method.

3)Alcohol method:-
Quick,Field method should not be used for organic soil containing Calcium Compound.

4)Torsion Balance Method:-
Quick,Lab method,Infra-red radiations are used for drying sample.

5)Pycnometer Method:-
Quick method,Suitable for Cohesion Soils.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Thixotropy:-
The property of regaining a part of strength after disturbance of remoulded clay sample is known as thixotropy.

Liquid Limit:-
Water content at which soil changes from liquid to plastic state.

Plastic Limit:-
Water content at which soil changes from plastic state to semi-solid state.

Shrinkage limit:-
Water content at which soil changes from semi solid to solid state. It is the lowest water content at which a soil can be completely saturated.

SENSITIVITY:-
It denotes degree of disturbance of undisturbed soil sample.

Liquefaction:-
Phenomenon in which soil losses its strength due to cyclic loading.

Honey-combed structure:-
Present in fine sands or silts.

Flocculated structure:-
Occurs in fine Clays and Colloids.

Dispersed structure:-
Occurs in remoulded Clays.

For Coarse grain Soil:-
Single grained structure.
Honey-combed structure.

For mixed soils:-
Coarse grained skeleton.
Clay matrix structure.
